Joe Coulombe opened the first Trader Joe’s in 1967 in Los Angeles. He was inspired by eating establishments like Mousey’s and the Bonanza Steakhouse chain. The original store was located in Pasadena, California.

The store sold Californian wines, gourmet foods, and unusual items such as mood rings and incense sticks. The company has since expanded its product range to include organic produce, artisan breads, international foods, and a large selection of wine and beer.

In 1979, the company was bought by German entrepreneur Theo Albrecht. Albrecht owned Aldi Nord, one of the largest supermarket chains in Europe. Trader Joe’s now has over 460 stores in 38 states across the United States.

The company is headquartered in Monrovia, California. California also has the most Trader Joe’s locations of any state, with over 100 stores.

The company is known for its excellent customer service, low prices, and unique products. Trader Joe’s does not accept manufacturer coupons or hold sales. However, it does offer a wide variety of discounts on food items throughout the year.

Some popular items include the two-buck Chuck wine and the Fearless Flyer newsletter. The company competes with other grocery chains such as Whole Foods Market, Safeway, and Kroger.
