The Starbucks Corporation is an American multinational chain of coffeehouses and roastery reserves headquartered in Seattle, Washington. As the world’s largest coffeehouse chain, Starbucks is seen to be the main representative of the United States’ second wave of coffee culture. Though Starbucks initially dominated the market, it faces intense competition from similar establishments such as Dunkin’ Donuts and Peet’s.
Founded in 1971, Starbucks is now present in 62 countries with over 30,000 stores. The company had revenues of $24.72 billion US dollars in 2019, with a net income of $3.026 billion US dollars. As of early 2020, there are nearly 150,000 employees working for Starbucks.
Starbucks stores typically open earlier than other retail stores (between 5 AM and 6 AM), and close later (between 9 PM and 11 PM). They are usually open seven days a week, except on certain holidays.
Due to its massive presence across the globe, Starbucks has come under fire for a variety of reasons including the ethical sourcing of beans, questionable business practices, and environmental impact. However, it remains one of the most popular coffee chains in the world.
