About Goodwill
Goodwill is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that provides job training, employment placement services, and other community-based programs for people who have disabilities or face other challenges. Goodwill was founded in 1902 by Rev. Edgar J. Helms, a Methodist minister and pioneer in the social work movement.
Helms collected used household goods and clothing in wealthier neighborhoods and sold them in poorer neighborhoods. The revenue from the sales was used to fund employment training for the needy.
Today, Goodwill is one of the world’s largest providers of education, training, and career services for people with disabilities and other barriers to employment. Goodwill operates more than 3,200 retail stores, 83% of which are located in the United States.
Goodwill also operates more than 150 stand-alone donation centers. In 2018, Goodwill served 24 million people in the United States and Canada. Goodwill is famous for its popular “Buy Nothing Day” sale, which offers deeply discounted items on the day after Thanksgiving.
Goodwill’s major competitors are Salvation Army and St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Stores. California has the most Goodwill store locations, with more than 300 stores statewide.
